Organic results are being crowded by ads, AI Overviews, local packs, videos, People Also Ask, product results and knowledge features. At the same time, a featured snippet can still place one source prominently near the top, display an identifiable link, occupy substantial screen space and direct a click to the exact passage on the source page.
An Ahrefs analysis of one million US desktop SERPs found that featured snippet visibility in its sample fell from 15.41% in January 2025 to 5.53% in June 2025, a relative decline of 64%, while AI Overviews increased sharply. Ahrefs reported a strong inverse correlation but correctly noted that correlation does not establish that AI Overviews caused every decline.
Featured snippets are no longer everywhere. That scarcity is precisely why the remaining opportunities deserve more deliberate targeting. Our broader SEO guide covers the full organic strategy. This article explains how to find, format and measure featured snippet opportunities that create real business value.
A snippet sized answer may win the box. The complete page determines whether the visitor has a reason to click, trust and act.
What a featured snippet is
A featured snippet is a highlighted extract that Google automatically selects from an indexed webpage to answer a search query prominently within the results. It commonly contains extracted text, page title, source URL, sometimes an image and a link to the source. Google says website owners cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Its systems decide whether a page contains a suitable response.
Why it is called position zero: SEO practitioners use 'position zero' because the box has traditionally appeared above the first standard organic listing. However, Search Console normally assigns the featured snippet position one because it contains a link to the source property. Position zero is a useful industry nickname, not Google's official Search Console position.
What happens after the click: Google may automatically scroll the visitor directly to the passage used in the featured snippet. This makes the extracted section a potential landing point inside the article, not merely search result copy.
Featured snippets versus other search features
These are frequently confused. Understanding the differences prevents wasted effort.
Feature | What it is | How it works | Schema needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
Ordinary snippet | Summary beneath a normal result | Google generates from page content or meta description | No |
Featured snippet | Highlighted answer at the top | Google extracts from page content algorithmically | No (none exists) |
Rich result | Enhanced result with structured data | Depends on supported markup (Product, Event, Recipe) | Yes |
People Also Ask | Expandable related questions | Featured style extract appears when expanded | No |
AI Overview | Generated multi source response | Google synthesises from several sources | No |
Featured snippets versus AI Overviews
Featured snippet | AI Overview |
|---|---|
Extracts from one webpage | May synthesise several sources |
Shows one primary source link | May display several supporting links |
Fixed extracted passage | Generated response |
Often concise | Can cover several subquestions |
Google selects source and extract | Google selects sources and generates summary |
Typically recorded as position one | Part of AI reporting ecosystem |
Established search feature | Expanding generative feature |
A query may show a featured snippet, an AI Overview, both or neither. Our guide on generative engine optimisation covers how to optimise for AI generated search experiences.
The featured snippet extracts your answer. The AI Overview may combine your answer with several others.
Are featured snippets disappearing?
They are declining for some query sets, but Google still supports and displays them. Google's featured snippet documentation remains active and was updated in December 2025. The 2026 search appearance documentation continues to list featured snippets as a current feature.
AI Overviews increasingly occupy searches that previously suited featured snippets, particularly broad informational queries. Featured snippets still appear where Google selects a concise extract as the useful response format.
What this means for your strategy:
Do not build the entire content programme around snippets.
Use them as one opportunity within a wider search appearance strategy.
Focus on queries where snippets still appear consistently.
Monitor whether AI Overviews are expanding into your target queries.
Prepare content that works for both featured snippets and AI citations.
Remember that the same clear, well structured content supports both features.
Does a featured snippet really receive 42.9% CTR?
This is one of the most important sections in this guide. A widely shared statistic requires careful qualification.
What the current benchmark says
First Page Sage's 2026 CTR report estimates featured snippet in the first position at 42.9%, standard position one at 39.8% and AI Overview first source position at 38.9%. The report describes itself as a meta analysis drawing from published data and internal information, primarily reflecting US search behaviour.
Why the number should not be universalised
CTR varies according to | Example impact |
|---|---|
Query type | Definitions may produce fewer clicks than complex comparisons |
Snippet completeness | A full answer reduces the need to click through |
Device | Mobile and desktop behaviour differs |
Branded vs non branded | Known brands may attract more clicks regardless of position |
Ad presence | Ads above the snippet compete for attention |
AI Overview presence | AI Overviews may reduce snippet visibility and clicks |
Local pack presence | Map results may dominate commercial local queries |
Whether the user needs more | Simple facts create zero click and complex decisions drive clicks |
Conflicting evidence
Ahrefs' earlier large scale featured snippet study found that snippets could reduce the total number of clicks because the answer was already visible. Its sample estimated 8.6% of clicks going to the featured snippet source and 19.6% to the result below. Ahrefs' February 2026 analysis also found that the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average CTR for the top ranking page across its informational keyword sample.
Neither figure should be treated as a law. The studies examined different periods, search sets, devices, layouts, methodologies and definitions.
Featured snippets in a zero click search environment
Featured snippets have two opposing effects. They can create a click advantage: visual prominence at or near the top, an identifiable source link, perceived authority as Google's selected answer and a direct destination scrolling to the exact passage. They can also eliminate the click: a simple definition fully displayed, a yes or no answer, a short process with no remaining complexity.
Our guide on zero click search strategy covers the broader pattern of staying visible when Google answers more searches directly.
Better snippet targets (reason to click through) | Lower click targets (treat cautiously) |
|---|---|
Answers that benefit from detailed explanation | One word definitions |
Questions where several conditions apply | Basic calculations and conversions |
Steps requiring practical implementation | Specific dates or simple facts |
Comparisons needing more rows or context | Questions fully answered in one sentence |
Topics where the business has a relevant service | Universally known information |
Answers that introduce rather than exhaust the subject | Yes or no questions with no conditions |
The best snippet opportunity answers enough to earn trust but belongs to a subject where the customer still benefits from the full page.
The main featured snippet formats
Format | Best suited to | Example queries |
|---|---|---|
Paragraph | Definitions, explanations, 'what is', 'why', qualified yes/no | What is topical authority? Why does PageSpeed change between tests? |
Numbered list | Steps, sequences, processes, staged procedures | How do I submit a sitemap? How to optimise for a featured snippet? |
Bulleted list | Options, examples, signs, requirements, causes, features | What should a service page include? Signs of a blocked drain? |
Table | Comparisons, prices, thresholds, specifications, schedules | Core Web Vitals scores? SEO vs Google Ads? Website cost ranges? |
Video | Visual demonstrations, tutorials, walkthroughs | How to use Search Console? How to clean a cast iron pan? |
Quick audit: find your best snippet opportunities in 15 minutes
This exercise identifies your most promising opportunities without any tools beyond Google Search and Search Console.
Step 1 (3 minutes): Open Search Console. Go to Performance. Filter to your strongest guide or service page. Sort queries by impressions (highest first). Write down the top 10 question style queries.
Step 2 (5 minutes): Search each query in Google. For each one, record: does a featured snippet appear? Who owns it? What format is it? Does an AI Overview also appear? Is the current answer better than what your page provides?
Step 3 (3 minutes): Score each opportunity: is the query commercially relevant to your business? Does your page already contain a reasonable answer? Would winning the snippet lead to a page that converts visitors?
Step 4 (4 minutes): Pick your top 3 opportunities. For each, write the direct answer you would provide in approximately 40 to 60 words. Compare it to the current snippet. If yours is clearer, more current or more qualified, you have a viable opportunity.
Working with Search Console data is covered in full in our Search Console walkthrough.
Which queries create viable snippet opportunities?
Common patterns that trigger snippets:
Definitions: What is topical authority? What is a canonical tag? What is a service area business?
Explanations: Why does PageSpeed change between tests? Why is my website not indexed?
Processes: How do I submit a sitemap? How do I verify Search Console?
Lists: What should a service page include? What are the signs of a blocked drain?
Comparisons: SEO versus Google Ads? Shopify versus WordPress? Repair versus replacement?
Thresholds: Core Web Vitals scores? Service pricing ranges? Appointment durations?
Less suitable: highly subjective 'best' queries with no stable answer, thin commercial keywords dominated by local packs or product grids, topics outside the business's expertise, questions requiring professional diagnosis rather than general information and queries answered better by calculators or official databases.
Start with existing rankings, not new pages
The strongest opportunities often come from pages that already rank on page one, receive high impressions, answer the query partially, sit beneath a competitor owned snippet, have enough authority to compete and need structural improvement rather than a new URL.
Why existing pages are preferable: the page may already possess links, age, query history, internal support, topical depth, user engagement and external recognition. Creating another page can introduce cannibalisation, duplicate intent, divided internal links and maintenance work.
The fastest route to position zero is often improving the page Google already considers relevant.
Score opportunities before optimising
Not every snippet is worth pursuing. Use this framework to prioritise:
Factor | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
Commercial relevance | 25% | Does winning this snippet support a paid service? |
Existing ranking strength | 20% | Is the page already competitive for this query? |
Search demand | 15% | Is there meaningful volume worth pursuing? |
Answer format fit | 15% | Can the business provide the natural format? |
Click continuation potential | 10% | Will the searcher still need the full page? |
Available expertise | 10% | Can the business substantiate the answer? |
Maintenance requirement | 5% | Can the answer be kept accurate over time? |
High priority example: 'How much does a business website cost in Australia?' Relevant to a web design service, strong decision intent, suitable table format, needs further explanation, high conversion pathway.
Low priority example: 'What does SEO stand for?' Easily answered in the snippet, little commercial qualification, extremely broad audience, low reason to click through.
A snippet can be easy to win and still have little business value. Note: this is a planning framework, not a Google metric.
The answer first content framework
This connects to our broader guide on blogging for SEO and to developing a small business content strategy. For each snippet candidate, structure the content in six parts:
1. Question: Use a clear heading matching the search intent.
2. Direct answer: Provide the concise response immediately (approximately 40 to 60 words for paragraphs).
3. Qualification: Explain when or why the answer changes.
4. Evidence: Support the factual claim with data, sources or experience.
5. Expansion: Give the full process, decision framework or context.
6. Action: Tell the reader what to do next.
How to structure each snippet format
Paragraph snippets
Start with a clear heading using the actual question or a natural close equivalent. Immediately answer beneath it, naming the subject, providing the core explanation and including the main qualification. Approximately 40 to 60 words is a practitioner testing range, not a Google requirement.
Paragraph answer checklist:
Names the subject in the first sentence.
Answers immediately without preamble.
Uses complete natural sentences.
Makes sense without reading the heading above.
Includes the main qualification or limitation.
Avoids unsupported superlatives.
Does not require a previous paragraph for context.
Flows naturally into the deeper explanation below.
Stronger paragraph answer | Weak paragraph answer |
|---|---|
A featured snippet is a highlighted extract that Google automatically selects from an indexed webpage to answer a query prominently in the search results. Website owners cannot nominate the passage manually and appearing in the box does not guarantee a click. | There are many different forms of search appearance that have become increasingly important over the years. One example that many marketers discuss is often known as position zero... |
Definition snippets
Recommended formula: [Term] is [clear category or definition]. It [main function or distinction]. Example: Topical authority is an SEO framework describing how comprehensively and credibly a website covers a defined subject through useful pages, internal relationships, expertise and evidence.
Avoid: circular definitions, starting with 'it', repeating the phrase unnaturally, promotional language, defining a term through what the company sells and including unnecessary history before the definition.
Step snippets and instructional content
Instructional content should specify preparation, sequence, decision points, risks and completion check. Include how to know the task worked, what to do when it fails and what the action does not guarantee.
Example: 1. Open the correct Search Console property. 2. Select Sitemaps in the left navigation. 3. Enter the sitemap path. 4. Submit it. 5. Check whether the status becomes successful. 6. Review Page indexing separately because sitemap success does not guarantee indexing.
List snippets
Use numbered lists for genuine sequences (steps, processes, rankings). Use bulleted lists for non sequential collections (options, signs, features, causes). Each item should begin consistently and be concise, with fuller explanations following the list.
Table snippets
Tables work best where rows and columns genuinely improve understanding: thresholds, costs, differences, specifications, schedules, service inclusions and option comparisons. Use actual HTML tables, not images. Google and users need access to the underlying text.
Requirements: descriptive heading, meaningful column names, one fact type per column, comparable rows, responsive mobile presentation, current data, cited source and explanatory paragraph.
Comparison snippets
Define both options, compare equivalent criteria, explain who each suits, include limitations and avoid declaring one universally superior. Support factual claims with evidence.
Restructuring an existing page for a featured snippet
Most snippet wins come from improving pages that already rank competitively, not creating new ones.
Restructuring checklist:
Remove unnecessary lead in paragraphs before the answer.
Add a precise heading matching the search question.
Place the direct answer immediately beneath the heading.
Name the subject in the first sentence.
Add the main limitation or qualification.
Keep the answer self contained (makes sense without the heading).
Preserve the deeper context and explanation below.
Add credible sourcing for factual claims.
Review nearby sections for duplication with the new answer.
Test the mobile presentation of lists and tables. Our guide on mobile SEO for Australian businesses covers the mobile specific considerations.
One page can target several related snippet opportunities
One well structured article may answer: What is a featured snippet? What is position zero? Do featured snippets improve CTR? How do you get a featured snippet? What types exist? Can schema create a featured snippet? These belong naturally within one guide. Building topical depth supports exactly this page level coverage.
Do not create six nearly identical URLs. Record primary queries, supporting questions, answer locations, headings, formats and business relevance for each page.
Avoid featured snippet cannibalisation
Cannibalisation occurs when several pages answer the same question. Diagnose through Search Console query to page data, title and heading comparison, internal links, ranking changes, content overlap and conversion purpose. Use the same merge, redirect, reposition and clarify approach that a well planned site architecture is built on.
Google cannot select your clearest answer confidently when the website itself publishes several competing versions.
Rankings and expertise still matter
Featured snippet formatting is not a shortcut around basic ranking strength. The page still needs relevance, crawlability, indexation, useful content, internal links, credible sourcing and external recognition where competition requires it. The credibility layer is built from first hand expertise signals across the website.
Higher risk areas requiring additional care: health, legal matters, finance, safety, regulation and public interest claims. Google maintains special featured snippet policies and may remove snippets that contradict established expert consensus.
The need for a concise extract never justifies removing a qualification that changes the answer. Position zero usually begins with earning the right to compete on page one.
Featured snippets for local businesses: worked examples
Local businesses can target informational and commercial questions surrounding their services. Featured snippets are more relevant to questions like "What causes blocked drains to keep returning?" than to direct searches like "plumber near me," which are dominated by local packs. The strongest opportunities sit at the intersection of informational search and commercial decision making.
Melbourne digital agency
Target query: How much does SEO cost in Melbourne? Format: paragraph introduction plus table of pricing ranges.
Direct answer: SEO pricing in Melbourne varies according to competition, website condition, service scope, content requirements and whether the work covers one location or several. Businesses may pay for a project, monthly engagement or specialist audit depending on the problem being addressed.
Full page continuation: pricing ranges by engagement type, what is included at each level, cost factors, warning signs of underpriced services, suitable business stages and a link to the SEO service page.
Brisbane plumber
Target query: What causes blocked drains to keep returning? Format: bulleted list.
Direct answer: Common causes include tree root intrusion, damaged or collapsed pipework, grease and debris build up, incorrect pipe fall and incomplete removal of the original obstruction.
Full page continuation: how each cause is diagnosed, camera inspection process, clearing versus repair options, cost factors and a link to the blocked drain service page. Diagnostic questions like this are the trades sweet spot: high volume, genuinely useful and one step from a service enquiry. Our guide on SEO for tradies covers the wider pattern.
Perth accounting firm
Target query: What does a Virtual CFO do? Format: paragraph.
Direct answer: A Virtual CFO provides ongoing financial forecasting, management reporting and commercial decision support without joining the business as a full time executive.
Full page continuation: service inclusions, Virtual CFO versus accountant comparison, suitability criteria, meeting cadence, pricing model and consultation booking. Definition queries suit advisory firms because the buyer is still learning the category.
Sydney restaurant
Target query: What should a private dining package include? Format: bulleted list or table.
Direct answer: A private dining package typically covers room hire or minimum spend, menu format, beverage package, staffing, setup, dietary handling, deposit terms and cancellation conditions.
Full page continuation: room capacities, menu options, dietary handling detail, accessibility, transport, sample event timeline and availability enquiry.
Canberra physiotherapy clinic
Target query: Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Australia? Format: qualified paragraph.
Direct answer: Most private physiotherapy appointments do not require a referral, although referral requirements can differ for specific funding, insurance or care arrangements.
High stakes health information should be reviewed by an appropriately qualified professional and the exceptions should never be compressed away solely to improve snippet eligibility. The compliance side of this vertical is covered in our guide on SEO for medical practices.
Before and after: restructuring for a snippet
After restructuring (answer first) | Before restructuring (buried answer) |
|---|---|
H2: What is a featured snippet? | There are many different forms of search appearance that have become increasingly important over the years. One example that many marketers discuss is often known as position zero, which refers to a special box that sometimes appears at the top of Google's results. This feature, technically called a featured snippet, was introduced several years ago... |
A featured snippet is a highlighted answer that Google automatically extracts from a webpage and displays prominently for a search query. Website owners cannot nominate the passage manually and appearing in the box does not guarantee a click. | [Answer finally arrives 200 words later] |
[Then continues with formats, examples, CTR, AI Overviews, implementation...] | [Most readers hit back before ever reaching it] |
The restructured version places the answer where Google can extract it and where readers can find it. The deeper context follows naturally.
Building the click beyond the snippet
A snippet can win visibility and still produce few visits. If your page ranks well but visitors are not progressing, our guide on traffic that does not convert diagnoses the gap.
Create continuation through:
Depth: exceptions, edge cases and practical implementation the snippet cannot contain.
Completeness: the full list, process or comparison the snippet only previews.
Visual evidence: tables, charts, photos, before and after examples.
Tools: calculators, checklists, templates the visitor can use.
Local proof: real pricing, timelines and examples from actual projects. A well structured service page naturally provides this continuation.
Clear CTA: what to do next, directly related to the question the snippet answered.
The page must load quickly and work on mobile. Our guide on Core Web Vitals explained covers the experience metrics that affect both ranking and engagement.
Optimising for both snippets and AI citations simultaneously
The Ahrefs data shows snippets declining as AI Overviews rise. But the underlying content principles overlap heavily: both features pull from well structured pages with clear, authoritative answers. The content that wins a snippet is often the same content that gets cited in an AI Overview.
The practical response is to optimise for both rather than choosing:
Write a clear, self contained answer passage under a question heading. This wins snippets and provides the concise statement AI systems extract.
Support the answer with detailed, expert content below. This gives AI systems the supporting evidence they need to cite you with confidence.
Include specific data, real examples and genuine expertise. This differentiates your content from generic answers that neither feature rewards.
Build the broader trust signals: reviews, citations, consistent NAP and demonstrated E-E-A-T. Our guide on getting cited in Google AI search covers the full AI citation strategy.
The wider pattern of how AI search affects visibility is covered in our guide on how AI search is changing things for Australian businesses.
What we recommend at Elev8d
Snippet targeting is a natural part of content work, not a separate service. When we build or rewrite pages, we format for snippets on every commercially relevant query the page targets. The same structural discipline earns snippets, feeds AI citations and produces pages that genuinely help the reader. FAQs
Can I guarantee winning a featured snippet?
No. Google selects snippet sources algorithmically and rotates them. You can maximise your chances through formatting and content quality, but nobody can guarantee a specific snippet for a specific query. Treat snippet targeting as a disciplined content habit, not a binary outcome.
Do featured snippets help local businesses specifically?
Yes, particularly for cost, process and comparison queries. A Perth pool builder who wins the snippet for "how much does a fibreglass pool cost" captures a research phase searcher who becomes a quote request once they see the full pricing page. Local businesses with genuine expertise have a structural advantage: they can provide real pricing, real timelines and real local context that generic content sites cannot.
Will AI Overviews kill featured snippets entirely?
Possible but not yet. The Ahrefs data shows a strong inverse correlation, but commercial and local intent queries still trigger snippets frequently. Google appears to be deploying AI Overviews more aggressively on informational queries and less on commercial ones, which actually concentrates snippet value on the queries that matter most for service businesses.
Should I optimise for snippets or AI citations?
Both, simultaneously. The content principles overlap: clear answers under question headings, genuine expertise, detailed supporting content and strong trust signals. Formatting for snippets does not hurt AI citation chances and the reverse is also true. Our guide on voice search and conversational queries covers the related spoken query patterns.
How often do snippets change hands?
Frequently. Google tests multiple sources for each snippet and rotates them based on perceived quality, freshness and user engagement. Winning a snippet is not permanent. The defence is the same as the offence: comprehensive, current, well formatted content on a page that users genuinely engage with.
Do I need special tools to target snippets?
No. Google Search Console (free) gives you the query and position data you need. A private browser window lets you check current snippet holders. Specialist tools can accelerate the research, but the 15 minute audit above works entirely on free tools.
Can schema markup create a featured snippet?
No. There is no featured snippet schema. Structured data supports other search features (product rich results, event listings, recipe cards) but cannot nominate a paragraph for the snippet box. The snippet is earned through content quality and formatting, not markup.
What if I win a snippet but get no clicks?
The snippet might be answering the question too completely, leaving no reason to visit the page. Shift your snippet targeting toward queries that introduce rather than resolve: cost ranges (the visitor wants their specific number), process overviews (the visitor wants the detailed steps) and comparisons (the visitor wants the full analysis). Simple definitions and yes or no answers are visibility wins, not traffic wins.
Next steps: pick your path
Run the 15 minute audit. Search Console plus a private browser. Most businesses find 3 to 5 realistic snippet targets in their first session.
Reformat existing content first. Your best snippet opportunities are almost always pages that already rank well but have buried or poorly formatted answers. Reformatting existing content is faster and cheaper than creating new pages.
Want help with the content depth? Send us your top 5 snippet target queries and we will tell you what the current holders are doing, what your page needs to win the box and whether the traffic is worth the effort.
