Google Ads can track calls straight from an ad and from your website after an ad click. To see which campaigns make the phone ring, Google's own tools are all you need.

Paid software earns its fee for shared call and form attribution, CRM links, routing or missed call recovery. Either way, tracking reports the enquiries you already get rather than creating new ones.

What Google Ads call tracking actually measures

It depends entirely on the method. That's why the question "do we track calls" has no useful yes or no answer.

Five different things get called a "call" in reports. They sit on a ladder. A tap on a phone link opens a dialler and proves nothing more. A recorded call means the provider saw a call connect, even to voicemail or an IVR menu. A staff answered call means a person picked up.

A qualified new enquiry is a business judgement made after the conversation. A booked job or a sale is the outcome the whole exercise exists for. Duration is a screening rule rather than proof of quality. A 25 second call can be a booked emergency job. A six minute call can be a supplier.

Route

What it records

What it does not prove

Calls from ads

A call to the Google forwarding number shown in a call or location asset

That the call was answered, or that it was a new customer

Calls after an ad click

A call to a forwarding number swapped onto your website for that visitor

A complete log of every call the business received

Phone number clicks

A tap or click on a tel: link, as a separate signal

That a call connected at all

Imported outcomes

A qualified call or sale matched back from your records

Anything you did not record and upload

Google's phone call conversion methods page is the official map of those routes. The first two use Google forwarding numbers. The third is a separate interaction signal. Google says it can track those clicks but not the calls themselves. So never describe that signal as a completed call.

The fourth needs a compatible integration or Google's own call import, depending on the data you hold.

Trades, clinics and professional services often have important phone enquiries. That depends on urgency, customer preference and how the business operates. Our Google Ads for trades page describes an industry where the call is usually the conversion. Keep an accessible written route beside the number regardless. Not everyone can or will call.

In Elev8d's service accounts, calls are commonly 30% to 50% of leads, more for emergency trades. That's our observation, not a market statistic. It covers the 45 service accounts we managed from May 2024 to September 2026, all with call tracking. Treat it as a sense of scale. Within a month, your own call log will show what share of your enquiries arrive by phone.

Attribution has limits that no vendor removes. The campaign, page and keyword detail available depends on the tracking method and the integration. A targeted keyword is not always the actual search query.

No method identifies every caller. None follows every person across devices, blocked scripts, privacy choices and repeat visits. Reporting 80% of calls with confidence is more useful than claiming 100% with no working to show.

Google forwarding numbers in Australia

Google's forwarding number documentation lists Australia among the supported countries. Each forwarding number is toll free, equivalent to a local number, or a local number. A local area code or prefix is matched whenever possible rather than guaranteed.

The numbers are Google's property. They can change or be reassigned. Google says they shouldn't be copied and promoted outside Google Ads. So keep them off business cards, directory listings and your Google Business Profile. They exist for two things only: call reporting and website call conversion tracking.

Google's call reporting page adds two details worth knowing before you rely on the data. Google doesn't charge for a user who dials the forwarding number by hand rather than tapping it. And on some calls, the caller ID shows a Google number instead of the caller's. Because of that, your call log can't always ring the person back.

The forwarding number documentation lists two more limitations. Call assets on the Display Network do not support forwarding numbers or call conversions. An early media phone tree plays a menu before the call connects. It's incompatible with Google's call tracking and may result in missed calls being reported.

Use responsive search ads with call assets, not call only ads. Google's call ads page says all options to create new call ads were removed in February 2026. Existing call ads stop receiving impressions in February 2027. Google recommends migrating to call assets now.

Any guide still telling you to build a call only campaign is out of date.

Don't expect Google's recording based call qualification in Australia. The measure calls from ads page states that the call recording feature is currently limited. The feature only covers calls where both parties are in the US or Canada. Where recording is unavailable, the system falls back to the minimum call duration you set.

An Australian account therefore has two qualification routes: the duration rule, and outcomes you record and import yourself.

Flow.

03CallThe provider routes the call to the business

That's the website call route. The direct from ad route is shorter. The person taps the number in the ad itself. The call goes through Google's forwarding number without your website being involved. Both routes end with a person at the business deciding what the call was worth.

Set up and test Google Ads call tracking

One sequence, in this order. Setups break when someone skips the plan and goes straight to the tags.

Plan the measurement

Before anyone touches the account, write down the real business numbers and where each one rings. Note which routes you will track and which pages show a number. Also note what tags and vendors already exist and who holds access to each.

Then define a qualified enquiry, the reporting window and how a conversion value will be set. Most important, define the single outcome that will be used for bidding. Keep the ad account and the call routing under the business's control, whoever does the setup.

Brief the person setting up call tracking

Routes: [calls from ads and relevant website pages]

Number owner and destinations: [business contact and routing]

Replacement method: [one native or vendor implementation]

Qualified enquiry: [agreed definition]

Bidding outcome: [conversion action and selected campaign goal]

Feedback: [staff owner, integration and review cadence]

Test and fallback: [routing checks and recovery owner]

That brief can go straight to a developer or an agency. Keep callers' personal details out of it. The account level prerequisites run from conversion categories to campaign goals. Our guide on how to set up Google Ads for a small business covers them. This article assumes the account itself works.

Configure calls from ads

In the current interface, the path starts at Goals, then Summary, then Create conversion action. Next, pick Conversions from phone calls. Choose Phone call lead as the category, then Calls from ads or Calls from website visits. Calls via uploads isn't offered under Phone call lead, only under other categories.

Call reporting must be enabled in the account settings first. Once it is, Google counts new calls against a default conversion action called Calls from ads. Check that action before creating another one with the same job.

Review each of these:

  • the verified call and location assets

  • the minimum duration

  • the value

  • the counting method

  • the conversion window

Then check the campaign goals. An action that isn't in the selected goal isn't what the campaign optimises toward.

Configure website calls

Choose one owner for number replacement, either Google or the vendor you selected, never both. For Google, the website call conversion setup has two options. One is the Google tag with the phone snippet. The other is the Google Tag Manager website call conversion tag, with the conversion ID and label. The number you enter must have the exact digits shown on the site.

The Tag Manager tag isn't compatible with international number formats. So it needs the national format, without the plus sign. The manual snippet needs the number to match the page exactly, including any country code. That's a method specific rule. It's not a general instruction to strip spaces and country codes from every implementation on the site.

The default tag tracks one number per page. Multiple distinct numbers or custom behaviour need the manual snippet and a developer. Make sure the displayed number and the tel: destination change together. Google notes this requires the callback function for clickable numbers.

Check every placement: header, footer, contact page and the mobile sticky bar. A vendor's number replacement follows its own documentation. It must preserve attribution through the integration you chose.

Keep a stable business identity

Dynamic number insertion is a controlled display swap for eligible visitors. It isn't a rewrite of your contact details. The main business number stays in the page as the fallback. It also stays in the structured contact information and in every citation. Our guide to getting more phone calls from your website covers running tracking numbers beside it.

For your Google Business Profile, use a business controlled number that connects to the actual business location. That's what Google's Business Profile guidelines require. A permanent, business controlled tracking number is different from a temporary Google forwarding number. The forwarding number must never go on your profile.

Our guide to local citations in Australia covers the wider name, address and phone number policy. That includes where tracking numbers belong.

Choose the bidding outcome

Primary actions are used for bidding when their goal is selected. Secondary actions are for observation. There's one exception: a secondary action inside a custom goal still bids. Google's primary and secondary conversion actions page sets out the rules. Our guide to Google Ads conversion tracking setup covers goals in full.

For calls, the trap is counting one person several times. Don't optimise toward these at the same time:

  • a phone click

  • a native duration conversion

  • a vendor call event

  • an imported qualified lead

They can all describe the same caller. The counting setting applies within each conversion action. So choosing One doesn't deduplicate across different actions.

One caller in the Conversions column
Before

Phone click, duration call, vendor event and imported lead all primary, so one enquiry reports as four

After

One primary action per enquiry and the rest secondary, so one enquiry reports as one

Feed back genuine outcomes

Google's native phone call conversion import works with calls that came through Google forwarding numbers. Each upload needs the caller's phone number and the call start time. Spell the conversion name exactly as the action, capitals included. Google recommends a time zone ID rather than an offset. That avoids errors when daylight saving starts or ends.

Wait at least four hours after creating the action before the first upload. Imported conversions can't be removed later. The same page warns about tracking the same calls with two actions in the Conversions column. That counts two conversions for every call.

A vendor's click linked import is a different route with its own rules. Don't require a website click ID for every direct from ad call. Don't assume every third party import uses Google's native matching. Document each of these:

  • the chosen method

  • its match diagnostics

  • how repeat calls from the same person are handled

  • the value basis in Australian dollars

Where qualified outcomes arrive reliably, plan to make them the bidding signal. Where they don't yet, use a clearly labelled interim measure such as the duration conversion. Meanwhile, fix the feedback process rather than pretending. There's no universal 30 second threshold. No minimum duration removes every bad call either.

Test it properly

A tag firing in Tag Manager Preview or Tag Assistant is the first check, not the test. Place controlled calls through each route. Then verify:

  • the displayed and dialled number

  • the destination the call reached

  • the business hours behaviour

  • the fallback

  • the call record

  • the qualification status

  • the one intended bidding outcome

Do it on mobile and desktop, with the script blocked and with the relevant consent states.

A full native test of the website route needs a real ad click. Google notes you'll be charged for it. Your ads can take up to an hour to be enabled for the action. A repeat test needs the gwcc cookie cleared first. So test deliberately, once per route, rather than clicking your own ads all afternoon.

Google's automated phone number verification also can't read a number that dynamic insertion has replaced. Verify domain ownership instead. Linking Search Console is the route Google recommends. The Google tag can't verify the domain when it's installed through a tag manager.

Also check the displayed text against the tel: destination. A page can show one number and dial another.

There is no universal 24 to 48 hour reporting delay to wait out. Check the diagnostics for the method you actually use.

Optional click diagnostics

Phone link clicks can work as a diagnostic signal, if you want one. A Tag Manager click trigger on tel: links can send a GA4 event. Our guide to getting more phone calls from your website walks through the trigger and its tests.

The event helps spot pages where people reach for the phone and don't connect. It stays a phone link click however you name it. It's not a lead.

Measure call quality and the cost of enquiries

Here's an example, not Elev8d client results. Assume two plumbing campaigns in the same period, with AUD $3,000 of spend each. The counts are enquiries rather than verified qualified leads. Nobody both called and sent a form.

Example campaign

Forms and calls

Form only cost

All enquiry cost

Emergency repairs

4 forms, 18 calls, 22 enquiries

$750

$136.36

General plumbing

10 forms, 2 calls, 12 enquiries

$300

$250

Example reporting change
$3,000Ad spendEmergency repairs campaign, AUD
$750Form only cost4 form enquiries
$136.36All enquiry cost22 unique enquiries

On form data alone, general plumbing looks like the cheaper campaign. Its $3,000 divided by 10 forms is $300, against $750 for emergency repairs' four. Count the 18 different phone enquiries and the comparison reverses. Emergency repairs falls to $136.36 across 22 enquiries, and general plumbing to $250 across 12.

That's the whole lesson: better reporting changed which campaign looked good. It didn't create a single extra enquiry. And with qualification and sales unknown, it doesn't show that emergency repairs made more profit.

The split is lopsided on purpose. Emergency repairs has 18 calls in 22 enquiries. That's the emergency work that runs well above the 30% to 50% phone share described earlier. General plumbing, at 2 calls in 12, sits below it.

Assess qualification, booking, sale value and contribution before anyone declares a winner. Read the account's other numbers with the same care. Our guide to the Google Ads metrics that matter walks through them.

Keep the quality categories

Separate new qualified enquiries from:

  • existing customer and support calls

  • spam and wrong numbers

  • duplicates

  • missed calls

  • calls whose outcome is unresolved

Record bookings and wins separately again. Use the same definitions every month. Keep the CRM data to what the follow up needs.

If a platform or an AI feature classifies calls for you, audit its labels. Check a sample against real outcomes before those labels touch bidding. A model that calls a supplier a lead will teach the campaign to find more suppliers.

Use the right denominator

Report ad cost per unique qualified enquiry separately from the fully loaded cost of acquiring a customer. The fully loaded figure includes the software, the staff time and the follow up. Define answered call rate as staff answered inbound attempts divided by eligible inbound attempts. Use the same period for both. Remember that a platform's "connected" status can mean the call reached voicemail.

Track recovered missed enquiries as their own line. A 20% missed call rate doesn't mean 20% of ad spend was wasted. Some of those people called back, some were spam and some were existing customers. Our guide to what a good cost per lead is in Google Ads details the definitions and economics.

Review enough calls to tell a pattern from a bad afternoon. Check intent, routing, hours, staffing and service fit before changing bids or adding exclusions. A caller's area code isn't reliable proof of where they are. That's particularly true where most mobiles share the same prefix.

Keep attribution windows and time zones aligned when one platform's count disagrees with another's.

Eventually the monthly review of goals and call quality turns into a job nobody has time for. At that point, Google Ads account management becomes a service rather than a chore.

Choose software and calculate the total cost

Compare the same scope. Native Google call reporting has no separate forwarding number subscription. But the advertising, the setup time and your ordinary phone costs still exist. A vendor's entry plan may not include the integration or the workflow you bought it for.

Which tracking setup fits the job?
Native GoogleGoogle Ads calls are the main need and the supported routes are enough
Lead tracking platformCalls and forms need shared attribution and a verified CRM or Ads integration
Advanced routingSeveral teams, locations or after hours coverage need more detailed handling

Those are needs rather than product categories. A routing system may also provide attribution. Low call volume doesn't rule out advanced routing for valuable enquiries. High volume doesn't force you onto a particular vendor. Choose on a verified plan and Australian capability, not a calls a month threshold.

Check the number pool against the eligible concurrent visits and the vendor's rules. Before paying, confirm:

  • Australian number inventory

  • the verification documents the vendor needs

  • landline and mobile routing

  • SMS support

  • support hours

  • portability and cancellation terms

Compare quotes on the same basis

Entry prices on a pricing page aren't comparable on their own. One plan may include a few numbers and minutes. Another may include none and price usage by country. Forms, Ads integrations and call flows may sit on higher tiers. So compare totals, not headline prices.

Ask each provider for one monthly figure at your real call volume. Check the invoice currency, not just the pricing page. If the bill comes in US dollars, convert it with the Reserve Bank's exchange rates. Then add usage, GST or other tax, card fees and setup time.

Ask how the platform handles Australian numbers. Check that it forwards to your mobiles and any 1300 number. Check that caller ID shows on its tracking numbers. Then confirm the actual destination and the recovery workflow before signing.

Explain the economics

The total cost is the platform, the numbers, the usage, the implementation and the ongoing review. Tax and exchange fees come on top. A break even model starts with the incremental tracking and follow up cost. It divides that by the contribution from each won job that's actually additional.

Reattributing an existing lead from "direct" to a campaign is useful knowledge and zero extra profit.

Our Google Ads waste estimator is a scenario tool for the common setup leaks. It isn't proof of a saving. The Google Ads budget estimator models spend from clearly stated lead assumptions. Our guide to how much Google Ads cost covers the setup and measurement costs beside media spend.

Recover missed calls and cover after hours enquiries

A tracked missed call is a missed call with a timestamp. The recovery process is operational, not technical. Specify the staffed hours, the public holiday exceptions and the Australian time zone that applies.

Route unanswered calls to an agreed backup person first. Then send them to a voicemail or callback queue that someone owns. Give a named role the job of following up inside a response window the business can meet. Log the attempt, the contact result and the eventual outcome. A queue without an owner recovers nothing.

Flow.
What happens when the first person cannot answer?
01AttemptThe inbound call reaches the staffed destination
02BackupUnanswered calls follow the agreed fallback route
ISSUEIf backup answers, log an answered call and stop here
03QueueCapture a suitable voicemail or callback task
04AcknowledgeUse an appropriate text only when capability and permission allow
05RecoverThe responsible person follows up within the stated window
06CloseRecord contact, qualification and the actual outcome

Only an unanswered call continues down the queue. The text step depends on the provider. Some missed callers can't be identified at all. That's down to the caller ID limit in Google's call reporting.

Schedule the call asset around real answering coverage. Don't switch off a whole campaign after hours when a form or a booking route still works. Remember that a call asset doesn't show on every impression anyway.

Keep the opening hours, the response expectation and the alternatives clear on the site. Do not advertise 24 hour service where there is none.

Missed call text back

The provider and the number need to support outbound SMS in Australia. A usable recipient number has to exist too. If both are true, one acknowledgement after an unanswered call is reasonable. Identify the business, state the real response window and monitor the replies.

Test delivery, withheld numbers and unsupported destinations. Stop the system sending the same message twice for one call. And confirm in writing that SMS works on your Australian numbers before you plan on it.

Missed call acknowledgement

[Business name] here. Sorry we missed your call at [time].

[Role or name] will call you back by [real response window] during [hours].

If it is urgent, [alternative route and its hours].

A missed call is not blanket permission for promotions. An acknowledgement about the call the person made is a different message from a marketing offer. Anything commercial needs the consent, sender identification and unsubscribe facility the ACMA's spam guidance describes. A template isn't a legal exemption. No health or service detail belongs in an automatic message.

Handle privacy and review tracking each month

Call metadata, audio recordings, transcripts and AI analysis are four different uses of data. Recording is optional rather than a prerequisite for counting calls.

Before enabling it, work out which rules apply to your callers and your staff. The OAIC's workplace monitoring page says employers must follow any relevant Australian, state or territory laws. Those include laws on monitoring and recording telephone conversations. We settle the notice or consent process before the first recording.

A pre call announcement is common practice, not a national permission slip. So don't assume it makes recording lawful everywhere for every purpose.

Privacy Act coverage depends on the organisation. A small turnover doesn't exempt a health service provider. The OAIC's small business guidance lists the exceptions. Our guide to Australia's privacy law changes for business websites covers who is caught.

Where the Australian Privacy Principles apply, those obligations reach the call platform. Collect only what the follow up needs. Restrict who can hear recordings. Secure the accounts and set deletion periods.

Review where an overseas vendor stores the data and what any AI processing does with it. Update the privacy information on the site to match the real setup.

Monthly review

Numbers and routes still work

Place a test call through each route and confirm where it rang

Hours and fallback match reality

The schedule, the backup and the queue reflect current staffing

Tags and imports are healthy

Preview, conversion diagnostics and import match rates show no errors

The bidding goal is still the intended one

One primary outcome per enquiry, custom goals checked, nobody counted three times

Quality categories are applied

New, existing, spam, duplicate, missed and unresolved all labelled

Rates, costs and outcomes are reconciled

Answered over eligible attempts, recovered enquiries separate, cost per qualified enquiry against wins

The number pool is sufficient

Concurrent eligible visits against the pool size

Permissions and retention are current

Access list, recording settings and deletion periods reviewed

Record what changed and who will fix it. Repeat the routing checks after a site relaunch, a phone system change or a vendor migration. That's when numbers quietly stop ringing.

What we recommend at Elev8d

Count calls before you pay to track them. We ran 180 Google Ads account audits from August 2021 to September 2026. Some of those accounts take enquiries by phone. About 2 in 5 had a bidding or reporting goal with no call conversion of any kind.

So we start with Google's own tracking. Turn on call reporting and check the Calls from ads action. Add the website call tag through one owner. That costs setup time, not a subscription.

Then we make one action primary for each enquiry. Until outcomes come back reliably, that's the duration conversion, labelled as interim. Phone link clicks stay secondary. Once staff log outcomes and you can upload them, imported qualified calls take over. That way Google Ads Smart Bidding learns from qualified enquiries rather than rings.

Next comes the answering. Give unanswered calls a backup route, a callback queue and a named owner. A dashboard can't ring anyone back.

We'd only add paid software for a named workflow. If nobody will read the call log each month, keep the subscription money.

We'd change the order in one case. If conversion tracking itself is broken, fix that first. Calls added to a broken setup only add noise.

FAQ

How long should a call last to count as a conversion?

Google leaves the minimum to you. The right number comes from your own calls. Compare a month of call durations with what each call turned out to be. Find the length below which few calls were genuine enquiries. Start there, then test the number again in each monthly review.

Can call tracking show me which keyword made the phone ring?

Sometimes. Calls from ads are tied to the ad and its campaign. Website calls can carry campaign and sometimes keyword detail, depending on the method and integration. A vendor with session level number pools can go further.

Is it legal to record calls in Australia?

It depends on federal, state or territory law, the parties and the purpose. Since recording is optional, decide whether you need it. Then get advice on the notice or consent process for your situation before switching it on.

Next steps

Trace one real enquiry end to end

Take one legitimate call from the last week. Follow it from the campaign to the number dialled and the person who answered. Carry on to the qualification note and the recorded outcome. The first gap in that chain is the first fix.

Fix that gap, then test again

Fix only that gap and place a controlled test call through the same route. Add the check to the monthly review. Then trace the next enquiry.
